Bodum French Press: Eileen French Press Components
Depends on where you are, french press is known by many names: press pot, plunger, coffee press, etc. If you are in UK, you will hear them call it cafetiere. In Italy, they call it caffettiera a stantuffo while in France, it’s known as cafetiere a piston (yes!…they don’t call it french press in France). In other parts of the world like South Africa and Australia, they call it in a more general term, coffee plunger. In the US, as in most parts of the world, it is known as french press– a name connoting the origin of this method of brewing (although, this is highly debatable as it’s still not exactly known whether this brewing method actually originated in France or in Italy).
I’ve always wanted to get my very own french press. And I’ve always wanted to get my very own Bodum. It’s one of those manual coffee maker that has always been in my priority purchase list. Its perhaps the simplest (apart from manual, pour-over drip) form of manual brewing you could find out there– as they say, “as easy as 1-2-3″. And literally it is. You first put the coffee grounds, pour hot water (…stir a bit), and then press it. That’s it!
For my first french press purchase I decided to get Bodum Eileen French Press. Eileen french press according to its related product literature (in verbatim) “was not only in honor of the great Irish designer Eileen Gray (1879 – 1976), but for all the coffee connoisseurs who frequent the bistros and cafés of Paris – Gray’s adopted city. It’s specifically designed to withstand the exacting conditions of busy café and restaurant use. A solid steel frame protects the glass from knocks and bumps, and the square handle makes it easy to carry more than one at the time. Who says you can’t have your own private Parisian bistro at home? The EILEEN has become an instant classic. It has all the wonderful advantages of a French press system built into its modernistic style. EILEEN is made from borosilicate glass, stainless steel, chrome or gold-plated steel and plastic and is dishwasher safe“.

My Eileen french press (gold-plated) is indeed very pleasing to the eyes. It exudes a certain classic and at the same time, classy appeal. It looks very good also in my kitchen with its shiny gold-plated finish. I am happy with my purchase and can’t wait to start pressing!
